2004

Week 13 is all about 2004. Hip-hop ruled and some artists who would go on to have long careers churning out pop hits were starting to hit their stride, while other artists flashed and burned and joined the One Hit Wonder bin. The transition from the 90s was in full stride giving us a true mixture of what the 90s had been and what the new century was going to be. 

 

 

This Love - Maroon 5 Future acne pitchman and game show judge Adam Levine's Maroon 5 had a few huge hits with some very cool jazz-tinged pop rock at the turn of the Century. This Love ruled the airwaves during one of the last years the airwaves really mattered.

 

 

The Reason - Hoobastank The band name implies a drop-D tuned screamo affair, but Hoobastank was at the crest of the emo-movement as it rose from the underground to the mainstream.

 

 

My Immortal - Evanescence Following a tradition of really sad songs by female artists (Janis Ian, Laura Nyro, Suzanne Vega), Amy Lee and Evanescence scored a rare huge hit with a simply scored, quiet and introspective ballad, proving that music audiences don't need to be yelled at all the time.  

 

 

My Boo - Usher and Alicia Keys The new R&B was an alchemy of hip-hop-inspired beats and melodies with a faint splash of mid-70s mellow, and Usher and Alicia Keys set the standard for R&B hits to come.   

 

 

First Cut Is the Deepest - Sheryl Crow Crow's version of Cat Stevens' 1967 ballad (Rod Stewart had a moderate hit with it in 1976) proves once again that a good song is timeless, regardless of who or when it's done.
